<br />
The President of the United Republic of Tanzania Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete flagged off a total of 65 climbers comprised of international and local journalists, movie stars, musicians, government officials, youth and ordinary people at Marangu Gate, Moshi on 5 March 2012.<br />
<br />
The Kili Climb was one of the activities for the International Women's Day 8 March 2012 with a theme "Speak Out, Climb Up" to end violence agains women and girls. Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to speak out against gender based violence is a very strong and clear message and action, that silence is no longer an option.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="mso-bidi-font-family: "Trebuchet MS"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Trebuchet MS";">Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro was hard and
arduous.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Some almost died in their
mission to end gender violence in Africa. </span><span style="mso-bidi-font-family: "Trebuchet MS"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Trebuchet MS";">As one journalist from The Citizen
newspaper, who happened to be at the campaign said, ‘the torturous climb reflected
the pain that women and girls go through when abused. Most of the men who
climbed the mountain agreed to respect and to advocate for women’s rights after
the climbing experience’. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">One of the aim was to mobilize national commitments from governments, civil society organizations, the private sector and development partners to take action to prevent violence against women, provide service to survivors and end impunity by perpetrators of the violence by 2015.</span><br />
<br />
This commitment will be witnessed on the 28 May 2012 when an International Association of Women in Radio and Television hold a Regional Conference on Gender Based Violence against Women and Children in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.<br />
<br />
Under the theme Regional Conference on Gender Based Violence: Trends, Challenges and Opportunities, a total of 25 international women in radio and television will join their local partners to map out strategies using the media to foster the campaign through.<br />
<br />
During the conference different presentations will be made followed by discussions and group work. The conference is also expected to come up with a communique which will be circulated to different stakeholders including the government as a way to enhance further partnership towards the campaign.<br />
<br />
Eight newspapers monitored before the Kili Climb Campaign show that issues related to gender based violence are inadequately reported. Between January and March 2012 Uhuru was the least in publishing 62 stories related to gender out of those only 3.1% were on gender based violence while Nipashe was slightly high for publishing 5.1%. The rest Business Times and Mwananchi faired almost equally to Uhuru newspaper.<br />
<br />
This result causes alarm of many cases on gender based violence go unreported. It is our hope that this regional conference will come up with new media approach to make voices of heard survivors heard!<br />
<br />
The government should support such efforts by media fratenity in order to prevent violence against women and children, provide services to survivors of violence and promote justice and end impunity. Wakati umefika sasa Watanzania tuache siasa na unafiki tuzungumze masuala yenye tija bila kuyaonea aibu wala mas'hara.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Tuzungumze, yanazungumzika.RonceSrhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12357643903081270685noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-413867149697900996.post-71604591667372778572012-02-03T17:03:00.004+03:002012-02-05T17:24:23.982+03:00Morning Singing Bird!<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span lang="EN-GB"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Morning singing bird is the best expression to give to this one week. We all know why birds sing in the morning or why cocks crow- to wake people up to do productive work.</span></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Tahoma", "sans-serif";">Traditionally journalists have different ways they use as source of information. They include eyes for observation, ears to listen to what is to be said and even nose for information needed. A journalist must know individual people and contacts before hand in order to get proper information. Other sources include press releases and other media. </span><br />
<div _moz-userdefined="">
</div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Tahoma", "sans-serif";">Like any other sources for a journalist to perform his/her duties, internet is also another useful tool of information. </span><br />
<div _moz-userdefined="">
</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Tahoma", "sans-serif";">Journalists benefit from internet as source of information to check facts and background or other issues concerning people. The internet also gives an opportunity to search global collection of news and information, to look for people and checking facts in editing as well as grammar. </span><br />
<div _moz-userdefined="">
</div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Tahoma", "sans-serif";">According to the trainer of Internet Training, <a href="http://bongoeditors2012.blogspot.com/">Peik Johannson,</a> much of the information is found on internet through search engines like Google, Firefox and others. He said, in 2004 there were 13 web pages. But in July 2008 Google announced that its search engine has discovered one trillion unique web pages on more than 100 million websites. </span><br />
<div _moz-userdefined="">
</div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Tahoma", "sans-serif";">These useful tools can only give best results if a journalist is aware of tips helpful in finding information from the web sites. Different languages are used while looking for information needed. Another tip is to choose the right word for the search to get good result. Use simple words for the search, key words are usually advisable. </span><br />
<div _moz-userdefined="">
</div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Tahoma", "sans-serif";">The journalist should know exactly what to search for and where to find it, is the search for simple facts, is it for background or any other information that can develop the story. </span><br />
<div _moz-userdefined="">
</div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Tahoma", "sans-serif";">Give yourself much more time to investigation before planning your story. The story should be in in a narrative format. Finally a journalist should plan to use his/time for research, writing, editing the text, checking fact and for delivering the story. </span><br />
<div _moz-userdefined="">
</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">

<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Tahoma", "sans-serif";">‘Looking at today’s declining newspaper readership and continuing that line, the last reader recycles the last printed paper in 2040- April, 2040 to be exact’, Phillip Meyer wrote in his book The Vanishing Newspaper.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Tahoma", "sans-serif";">With the emerging of new internet technology, newspapers industry has been threatened worldwide. Citing an example of News Corporation, the evolution of internet has attributed to the virtual information monopoly newspapers have enjoyed for decades, population growth that kept circulation reasonably intact and therefore masked slow circulation decline and lastly absolute circulation decline did not affect profitability. Therefore measures were not taken by the corporation to redress this cause.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Tahoma", "sans-serif";">This was cited in the speech by <a href="http://www.newscorp.com/news/news_247.html">Rupert Murdock in his speech to the American Society of Newspaper Editors</a> seven years ago.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Tahoma", "sans-serif";">Tanzania’s case is not exceptional. Tanzania next to South Africa, is leading of having a good number of newspapers and magazines, let alone radios and television outlet.</span></div>

Prominent newspapers like ‘Mfanyakazi’-an organ for trade unions, ‘Kiongozi’ a Roman Catholic religion organ have either declined no longer in circulation.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Tahoma", "sans-serif";">‘Uhuru’ the ruling party organ is of present rarely seen in circulation, just those few to mention. Decline in circulation has adversely affected advertising potential that led to natural death of some of the newspapers.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Tahoma", "sans-serif";">The emerging habit of Tanzanian youth to devote more on internet has exarceberted the declining culture of reading. It is very rare to see a teenage kid holding a book or pamphlet reading.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Tahoma", "sans-serif";">Newspapers still play a vital role in informing the citizen on important matters affecting their lives. In order to serve its readership and strengthen business, it is important to challenge and reformulate the conventions and culture of monopoly and censorship.</span></div>

Box to Dot Com<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Tahoma", "sans-serif";"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Most people</span> <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">especially the young refer to people of my age as <em>P.O. Box</em>, meaning people of nostalgia. But today here I am to unvail that description. The word <em>dot com</em> is commonly used because of the advanced information technology world wide. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">When this training started and looked around me, the room was packed with journalists of <em>Kizazi Kipya</em>. And believe you me, at first I felt out of place, but no I wasn't. Then it came into my mind, "will I be able to catch up with this young blood?" Time for introduction, the dot coms went, it was now my round...!" "I start,... they call me.....<em>P.O. Box, mzururo street</em> <em>nowhere</em>......", laughter. I gathered my strengths until finished the introduction.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uj9QkP2nFsM/TyqhQogF-tI/AAAAAAAAABI/zP79IAR8_c4/s1600/Coordinator+of+training+Rose+Haji+doing+her+job.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" sda="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uj9QkP2nFsM/TyqhQogF-tI/AAAAAAAAABI/zP79IAR8_c4/s320/Coordinator+of+training+Rose+Haji+doing+her+job.JPG" width="320" /></a><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I started to SWOT analyse myself. Strenghts, yes I have because am computer literate. At least I can use the computer to communicate with others. Weakness, well, everybody has his/her weaknesses. What about Opportunity....wow...the training is the opportunity to bridge the gap between the <em>P. O. Box</em> and <em>dot com</em>. Threats that I have is the speed to up catch up with <em>dot com</em>.</span></div>
</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The opportunity can be used to strengthen my capacity- the trainer who is also a radio practitioner like myself and the training to be offered by him. He tried to best of his knowledge to remove my fears in order to meet my expectations of the training. This is the internet training bringing together editors, lecturers, senior journalists and others.</span></div>
</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">It is a small group of 11 people with brains, but we interract, participate and mostly share jokes and laughter! The question was thrown to me by the trainer who is of Finnish origin called Peik Johannson. "P.O. Box, tell the participants how did you use to distribute pre recorded radio programmes?" I replied, by post,.. ? The dot coms laughed. Enough testimony of <em>P.O. Box</em> adjective. The session went by and there I was with my <em>dot coms</em> in day one of the training. It is the rising sun. </span></div>
</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">With the articulation and well blended training programme, after five days, my name will change. It will change because apart from the literacy that I do have, will be able to effectively make use of internet in modern journalism for fact finding, news monitoring, communication and publication with the purpose of creating balanced and critical high quality journalism for media.</span></div>
</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Age ain't nothing but a number! I am moving to dot com right from day one! Thanks to <a href="http://misainvestigativeinternet.blogspot.com/">MISA TAN</a> for organizing this workshop in collaboration with <a href="http://vikes.fi/vikes-in-english/about-vikes/">Vikes </a>through Finnish Foreign Ministry.</span></div>
